Who Is Sarah Hunter?

Sarah Hunter MBE is an award-winning rugby player, former Captain of the Red Roses, and England Coach! Leading the way for future female rugby legends, Sarah is one of the most inspiring role models in 21st-century sport. Let's take a look at her glittering career to date. 

Early Career

Sarah began playing rugby league as a nine year old for the Longbenton and Gateshead Panthers. In 2000 she began playing rugby union at Novocastrians RFC as a running centre. After being named 'Player of the Year' she was selected for the England U19s. 

Club Career

Starting at aged 15, Sarah began began playing for the Lichfield Ladies in 2004. With the team, Sarah established herself as a trailblazer in the sport. After two years playing for the Bristol ladies, Sarah moved to Loughborough Lightning, one of the most successful teams in the East Midlands. These roles built Sarah's skills in high-performance teams and leadership.

International Career

Armed with a foundation of skills and knowledge from her club career, Sarah went from strength to strength at an international level. Playing on a global scale, she truly established herself as one of the finest England players on the pitch. Sarah made her England debut for the Red Roses in 2007 as a back row player and she has had a long and distinguished career on the team.

  • She was apart of the 2010 England Women's Rugby World Cup team where they finished second.
  • Was a key player in the 2014 Champion World Cup Team. 
  • Promoted to captain!
  • Sarah led England to victory at their three-Test tour of New Zealand in 2013.
  • In 2014 the Red Roses were Women's Six Nations Championship.
  • Sarah captained England to the 2017 Ireland Women's Rugby World Cup final.
  • Ensured England won the Grand Slam in the 2017 Women's Six Nations tournament. 
  • After injury, Sarah returned to the international scene in 2021 as England beat Italy in the second round of the 2021 Six Nations. 

With 141 caps under her belt, Sarah is still the England teams most capped players.

Sarah has scored over 100 points for England, making her one of the team's most talented players. In celebration of her success, she was appointed MBE for her services to sport in 2015, followed by the World Rugby’s Player of the Year award in 2016.
