Former rugby union player and award-winning sportswoman, Maggie Alphonsi is a pioneer of female representation in rugby.

Who Is Maggie Alphonsi?

Born with a club foot, Maggie faced her first hurdle at a young age, in order to follow her dreams and play rugby. She went on to represent England 74 times, scoring a whopping 28 tries prior to her retirement. On the Six Nations' stage, Maggie is credited for England's seven consecutive wins, a mark of her on pitch prowess.

Star of the 2014 France Rugby World Cup, Maggie secured England's first place finish, breaking a 20 year long losing streak. Her house-hold fame is credited to her World Cup performance, which firmly positioned Maggie in the hearts of the nation. She retired shortly after the World Cup, to pursue her speaking and commentating career.

As a coach and female inspiration, Maggie promotes the importance of female representation in sport. She is a regular commentator for Sky Sports, BT Sport and the BBC, where she shares her expert opinion of current matches. A testament to her position as a female role model, Maggie was the first former female player to commentate on men’s international rugby and write sports columns for a national newspaper, The Telegraph.

In 2016, further confirming her position as a leading rugby expert, Maggie was appointed the first England Women’s player on the National Member of the Rugby Football Union’s Council, specialising in diversity and inclusion. Aside from her direct role in British rugby, she is also an Ambassador for such charities as Peace One Day, Wooden Spoon, Sporting Equals and SKRUM.

Maggie was even the first woman to receive the Pat Marshall Award in its 50-year history. As a reflection of her respect in rugby, she has featured on such voting panels as the World Rugby Men's 15 Player of the Year Award, World Rugby Coach of the Year Award and World Rugby Team of the Year Award.
